Awesome Glossary at Massage Therapy dot Com

~Aromatherapy~

Aromatherapy uses several scents of essential oils made from fruits, bark, flowers and other parts of plants. The scents are said to be able to heal, soothe and regenerate both spirit and body. The oils are added to regular massage oils, creams, gels or lotions or to the air to provide a comforting or stimulating boost to your massage.

~Fully Clothed Massage~

This is closely related to the Swedish massage routine. No clothing is removed, no lubricant is needed and the main technique is compression. Excellent for those who enjoy a deeper touch and working each muscle from soles to head but don't want to undress. Great if you are shy. I learned this my practicing on my husband when we didn't have time for a massage complete with oils, sheets or even a table! You can order any amount of time you desire.

~Deep Tissue Massage~

Deep tissue works much deeper that the other therapies (hence the name) and requires extra effort for those desiring a harder massage or those who need extra muscle work. Heat must be applied or created to loosen muscles in order to get deep enough without excess pain or injury. It is generally added to relaxation massage in troubled areas.

~Ear Candling~

This is a very old method that is meant to send warm smoke into the ear to get wax moving to relieve sinuses and some ear aches. A hollow 'candle' is placed snuggly in the ear and set on fire from the top of the tube and allowed to burn down half way. Results on this method are alittle sketchy (I'm not quite the believer but I am glad to do it if you are) but goes along with the southern technique of blowing cigarette smoke into the ear of someone with an ear ache.

~Hot Stone Therapy~

Basalt stones are heated in a cooker to a temperature high enough to hold heat in the stone. The massage is a general relaxation massage but with the stones added. Stones are placed on the areas not being worked on while two stones are held in the therapist's hands and used to aid in the massage. The heat relaxes the muscles and deepens overall relaxation. I call it the icing on the cake. You need to order atleast 45 minutes when getting this type of addition due to prep and clean-up time. I learned it from a therapist friend and love getting it and doing it.

~Hypnosis~

I am a certified hypnotist. Hypnosis is a completely natural phenomenon and can be used in an office setting to help healthy people overcome common negative habits, increase their plusses and decrease their minuses. It is a relaxing, gentle form of approaching the subconscious to make quick and lasting change. See Julie Parker's Hypnosis Site.

~Pregnancy Massage~

As the name states, this massage is for the pregnany ladies only. It is a general massage but makes use of the side-lying position for the majority of the massage and targets the areas that have the most strain while carrying baby. Care is taken for blood and oxygen flow, joints that are now more flexable than usual due to the hormone, relaxin, and bolstering with extra pillows for the comfort of mom.

~Reiki: Usui~

Reiki is the Japanese form of 'universal energy' and is used to strengthen and heal the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Practitioners have their energies attuned by a master so they can use the Reiki to heal themselves, other people, animals, plants and, ultimatly, the planet. It is not neccessary to touch the client but have the hands above them, reading and healing. The goal is to improve health by returning balance. I am a Reiki II so I have long-distance healing ability as well.

~Relaxation Massage~

This coveres the standard massage or 'swedish' massage. Oils, lotions, gels or creams are used on the skin of the client and only the areas being treated are exposed. There are five basic strokes, all flowing toward the heart to foster better circulation and to prevent vessel damage. Relaxation or body and mind is the goal.

~Triggerpoint Therapy~

The taut band therapy is likening the muscle to a rubber band. The tighten the muscle, the more stress is on the tissue connected to that muscle. A knot forms where the most damage is done. This is the trigger point and to release it (and stop the pain) that taut band is pulled and loosened until the muscle relaxes and the point itself has a chance to heal. Posture and work often do the same stresses to the same points so care must be taken to give that part of your muscle a break to keep injuries from becoming chronic.

~Warm Bamboo Massage~

Wood made from bamboo are heated against heating pads until pleasantly warm to the skin and muscle. The massage is a general relaxation massage but the bamboo sticks add deep tissue and enhance the relaxation work. This addition can be added to any amount of time and the bamboo is used for the entirety of the massage. A nice alternative to hot stone massage.
